Teen HYPE awarded nearly $2.5 million in federal funding to implement youth programs
DETROIT (October 18, 2016)— Teen HYPE, a local youth development agency, will receive nearly $2.5 million in federal funding to implement two youth health and development programs, enabling the nonprofit to continue being a premier youth serving organization in Detroit.
The first grant was awarded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and will total nearly $1.2 million over 5 years, helping Teen HYPE to prevent substance abuse and HIV among Detroit youth. While Teen HYPE has programs that provide confidential HIV testing and counseling for young people, this is the first time Teen HYPE will offer a substance abuse prevention component.
“Our substance abuse prevention program will provide tools necessary to educate our youth on substances that affect their capacity to perform effectively in school, in the workplace and in life,” says Teen HYPE’s CEO, Ambra Redrick. “We will also address substances that are seemingly harmless, such as marijuana, which young people may use to self-medicate their feelings resulting from trauma and therefore keeps them from dealing with issues in a healthy way.”
The second grant comes from the Administration for Children and Families, a new $10-million-dollar program aimed at providing information and skills to help young people avoid the risks associated with sexual activity. Teen HYPE is one of 21 organizations selected to participate in this program and will receive $1.3 million over a 3-year period.
Since 2004, Teen HYPE has nurtured the lives of thousands of Detroit teens and pre-teens through strong, notable programming. “We’re honored to participate in these HHS programs and very excited to continue mobilizing Detroit youth toward a promising future,” Redrick says. “We are all about getting our youth ready for the world—and that starts with getting them ready to live healthy lives and ready to lead; these new programs will help us to do that.”
